Living as Muslim in Accordance with the injunction of the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

All praises is the Due to Allah alone, As-Samad Lam yalid wa lam yuu lad, Lah Qobilah li qobilka wa lah Qobilka qidamu.

May His Peace and Blessing continue to shower upon the Peak of our Spiritual Inspiration, the icon of our intellectualism, in morality dynamism, Rasullullah (SAW) and May Allah extends His blessing upon his household, his wives, his companions and those who are fore- runners among the Muhajirun and Ansari and those who are still steadfast following his footsteps, till the Day of Accountability. Amin.

Islam is the Right Religion but most among mankind do not know it (Quran 12:40 and 30:30). Unfortunately, those who understand Islam as the Right Religion are not united. Not all of them adhere to the Quran and the Sunnah (Traditions or Practices, which include the Ahadith or teachings and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). They are divided into different sects in the same way as the non-Muslims are divided. Mankind must have ample and correct knowledge of Islam based on the Quran and the authentic Sunnah in order to be with the rightly guided Ummah (Muslim Nation) of the Prophet (SAW) who will be saved from the Hell-Fire:
Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: “The Jews were split up into seventy-one or seventy-two sects; and the Christians were split up into seventy one or seventy-two sects; and my community will be split up into seventy-three sects.” (Abu Dawud 4579)
Abdullah Bin Amr (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, “There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra'il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother, there will be among my Ummah one who will do that; and if the people of Isra'il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect.” They (the Companions) said: “Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wasallam), which is that?” Whereupon he said: “It is one to which I and my companions belong.” (Tirmidhi 171)
The above authentic hadith tell us that only those who adhere and follow the Prophet’s Sunnah will be saved from the Hell-Fire. For the guidance of the whole mankind, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has commanded us to believe and follow Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). Allah the Almighty tells us in His Book:
“O mankind! The Messenger has come to you in truth from Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Believe in him: it is best for you...” (Quran 4:170)
“Say (O Muhammad): ‘If you do love Allah follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins for Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.’ Say: ‘Obey Allah and His Messenger.’ But if they turn back Allah loves not those who reject Faith.” (Quran 3:31-32)
“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures); -- in the Torah and the Gospel; for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil. He allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure). He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honor him, help him, and follow the Light which is sent down with him -- it is they who will prosper.” (Quran 7: 157)
The above Quranic Ayah (Verses) clearly tell us that it is a must for all of us to follow and obey Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam), Allah’s Final Messenger and Prophet to the whole mankind. We have to follow his Sunnah as it is a clear divine commandment from Allah the Almighty Who Alone is our Creator and Sustainer. Those who do not follow the Prophet’s Sunnah do not actually follow the Quran for Allah the Exalted has repeatedly tell us in the Quran to follow and obey His Messenger (SAW). He has warned those who disobey the Prophet (SAW) with humiliating punishment in the Hell-Fire:
“But those who disobey Allah and His Messenger and transgress His limits will be admitted to a Fire, to abide therein. And they shall have a humiliating punishment.” (Quran 4:14)
In line with the Quranic divine injunctions on obedience to Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and adherence to his Sunnah, our beloved Prophet (SAW) himself enjoins us to follow his Sunnah. He admonishes us to keep away from the different sects that have deviated from the True Path, Islam. He tells us to keep away from those sects and not to change Islam as it is the Right Religion:
Hudhaifah ibn Al Yaman (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that the people used to ask Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) about good, but I used to ask him about evil for fear that it might overtake me. Once I said, "O Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam)! We were in ignorance and in evil and Allah has bestowed upon us the present good; will there be any evil after this good?" He said, "Yes.” I asked, "Will there be good after that evil?" He said, "Yes, but it would be tainted with Dakhan (i.e. little evil).” I asked, "What will its Dakhan be?" He said, "There will be some people who will lead (people) according to principles other than my Sunnah (Tradition). You will see their actions and disapprove of them.” I said, "Will there be any evil after that good?" He said, "Yes, there will be some people who will invite others to the doors of Hell, and whoever accepts their invitation to it will be thrown in it (by them).” I said, "Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam)! Describe those people to us.” He said, "They will belong to us and speak our language.” I asked, "What do you order me to do if such a thing should take place in my life?" He said, "Adhere to the group of Muslims and their Chief.” I asked, "If there is neither a group (of Muslims) nor a chief (what shall I do)?" He said, "Keep away from all those different sects, even if you had to bite (i.e. eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in that state.” (Bukhari 4/803 and 9/206)
Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, "Every child is born with a true faith of Islam (i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone) but his parents convert him to Judaism, Christianity or Magianism,Paganism as an animal delivers a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?" Then Abu Hurairah (radhiallahu anhu) recited the holy verses: "The pure Allah’s Islamic nature (true faith of Islam) (i.e. worshipping none but Allah) with which He has created human beings. No change let there be in the religion of Allah (i.e. joining none in worship with Allah). That is the straight religion (Islam) but most of men know, not.” (30:30). (Bukhari 2/ 296, 441; 6/298 and Muslim)
When a child is born, it has with it a natural belief in God. This natural belief is called in Arabic the “Fitrah”. (Al-’Aqeedah at- Tahaaweeyah, (8th Edition.1984) p.245.) If the child were left alone, it would grow up aware of God in His oneness, but all children are affected by the pressures of their environment whether directly or indirectly. The Prophet (SAW) reported that God said:
“I created My servants in the right religion but the devils made them go astray.” (Saheeh Muslim)
The Prophet (SAW) also said,
“Each child is born in a state of “Fitrah”, but his parents make him a Jew or a Christian. It is like the way an animal gives birth to a normal offspring. Have you noticed any (young animal) born mutilated before you mutilate them?” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)
Fitrah means: The predisposition in humans to worship One God, So, just as the child’s body submits to the physical laws which God has put in nature, its soul also submits naturally to the fact that God is its Lord and Creator. But its parents try to make it follow their own way and the child is not strong enough in the early stages of its life to resist or oppose its parents. The religion which the child follows at this stage is one of custom and upbringing and God does not hold it to account or punish it for this religion. When the child matures in youth and clear proofs of the falsehood of his religion are brought to him, the adult must now follow the religion of knowledge and reason.” Al-’Aqeedah at-Tahaaweeyah, (5th ed.: 1972). P.273. At this point the devils try their best to encourage him to stay as he is or to go further astray. Evils are made pleasing to him and he must now live in the midst of a struggle between his Fitrah and his desires in order to find the right road. If he chooses his Fitrah, God will help him overcome his desires even though it may take most of his life to escape, for many people enter Islam in their old age although most tend to do so before that.
Because of all these powerful forces fighting against the Fitrah God chose certain righteous men and revealed to them clearly the right path in life. These men whom we call prophets were sent to help our Fitrah defeat its enemies. All the truths and good practices present in societies around the world today came from their teachings, and if it were not for their teachings, there would be no peace or safety in the world at all. For example, the laws of most Western countries are based on the “Ten Commandments” of Prophet Moses, like “Thou shalt not steal” and “Thou shalt not kill” etc., even though they claim to be “secular” governments, free from the influence of religion.
Thus, it is man’s duty to follow the way of the prophets since it is the only way which is truly in harmony with his nature. He should also be very careful not to do things simply because his parents and their parents did it, especially if knowledge reaches him that these practices are wrong. If he does not follow the truth, he will be like those misguided people about whom God says in the Quran:
“If they are told to follow what God has revealed, they say: ‘No, we will continue to follow what we found our fore parents doing!’ Even though their fore parents did not comprehend anything nor were they rightly guided.” (Quran 2:170)
God forbids us from obeying our parents if what they want us to do is against the way of the prophets. He said, in the Quran,
“We advise man to be good to his parents, but if they try to make you do in My name what you know to be false, do not obey them.” (Quran 29:8)
Those who are fortunate to be born in Muslim families must be aware that all such “Muslims” are not automatically guaranteed paradise, because the Prophet warned that a large part of the Muslim nation would follow the Jews and Christians so closely that if they entered the den of a lizard, Muslims would climb in after them as well.( Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim) He also said that before the Last Day some people would actually worship idols. (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim)
All of these people will have Muslim names and consider themselves Muslims, but it will be of no benefit to them on the Day of Judgement. Today, there are Muslims all around the world praying to the dead, building tombs and masjids over graves and even performing rites of worship around them. There are even some who claim to be Muslim and worship Ali as God. The Nusayris of Syria and the Druzes of Palestine and Lebanon. Some have turned the Quran into a good luck charm which they hang on chains around their necks, in their cars or on key chains etc. Therefore, those born into such a Muslim world who blindly follow whatever their parents did or believed, have to stop and think whether they are simply a Muslim by chance or a Muslim by choice, whether Islam is what their parents, tribe, country, or nation did or does, or what the Quran teaches and what the Prophet and his companions did.
For our salvation, it is a must that we must strive hard to know Islam based on the Quran and the Sunnah in order to revive the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). The following Ahadith must serve as inspirations for us to revive the Prophet’s Sunnah:
Hasan Al-Basri (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “He whom death overtakes while he is engaged in acquiring knowledge with a view to reviving Islam with the help of it, there will be one degree between him and the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) in Paradise.” (Tirmidhi 249 and Darimi)
Sa’id ibn Thabit (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that he heard Allah’s Messenger (SAW) says: “May Allah brighten a man who hears a tradition from us, gets it by heart and passes it on to others. Many a bearer of knowledge conveys it to one who is more versed than he is; and many a bearer of knowledge is not versed in it.” (Abu Dawud 3652)
Bilal ibn Harith al-Muzani (radhiallahu anhu) narrated that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “He who revived a Sunnah out of my Sunnah, which has died after me, for him is the reward like the reward of those who acted upon it, without any decrease in that reward” (Tirmidhi 168)
Abdullah (radhiallahu anhu) reported on the authority of his father, “I heard Allah’s Messenger (SAW) saying, “He who revived a Sunnah of mine that was extinct after me, would (receive) a reward like the reward of one of the people who acted upon it without any diminution in their rewards” (Ibn Majah 1/210)
For our complete guidance, it is a must for us to learn and follow the Sunnah. If possible, let us invite others to learn and follow the same. We must know that our Creator sent His Messenger (SAW) with Guidance and the Religion of Truth to make it prevail over all religions and that He promises great rewards for those who support the Truth. Allah the Exalted tells us:
“It is He (Allah) Who has sent His Messenger (SAW) with Guidance and the Religion of Truth. That He makes it prevail over all religions, even though the pagans may detest (it).” (Quran 61:9)
“And he who brings the Truth and he who confirms (and supports) it -- such are the men who do right. They shall have all that they wish for, with their Rabb (Only God, Cherisher and Sustainer). Such is the reward of those who do good: so that Allah will remit from them (even) the worst in their deeds and give them their reward according to the best of what they have done.” (Quran 39:33-35)

Oh Allah! I seek protection in You from that I should join any partner with you knowingly, I seek your forgiveness from that which I do not know. I repent from ignorance, I free myself from disbelief and from joining partners with You, and I free myself from all sins. I submit to your will, I believe and I declare; “There is no god besides Allah The Eternal and Muhammad (SAW) is the messenger of Allah
Oh Allah! Guide me to having beautiful manners and characteristics; no one can guide me to beautifying them except You. And turn away from me all evil actions and characteristics, no one con turn them away from me except You.
Allahumma infa`ni bima `allamtani wa `allamni ma yanfa`uni!

OH ALLAH! Make useful for me what You taught me and teach me knowledge that will be useful to me.
The righteous predecessors also recommended that a dying person be reminded of his good deeds, so that he can have positive thoughts about his Lord. Jaabir narrated: The Messenger of Allah said, “None of you should die except in the state of having positive thoughts about Allah.” (Muslim).

May Allah continue to Guide and Guard us aright. Amin
