The Seventh Obstacle: Unavoidable

Bismillahi Rahman Raheem In ‘Madarij as-Salikin’ (2/218-222), Ibn al-Qayyim has a section about the obstacles that Satan puts into the path of the one who chooses to live his life for Allah. He mentions the six commonly known obstacles in the order that they will be thrown into the path of the believer, such that whoever passes through one obstacle is then faced with the next (disbelief, followed by innovation in religion, followed by major sins, followed by minor sins, followed by permissible acts that distract one from acts of obedience, followed by acts of obedience that are of lower reward than others). However, he mentions a seventh and final obstacle for the one who passes through the above six successfully: “…So, if he successfully passes through these, there remains only one obstacle from which the enemy (Satan) calls him from, and this is an obstacle that he must face. If anyone were to be saved from this obstacle, it would have been the Messengers and Prophets of Allah, and t...

al-Istawaa ‘ala al-’Arsh - Allah’s Rising Over His Throne

Bismillahi Rahman Raheem Imam Bukhaari & Imam al-Laalikaaee Below is a translation of some points from ‘Khalq Af’aal al-Ibaad’ of Imam Bukhaaree (RH), pp.13+, then following this are some points from al-Laalikaaee’s work to do with the subject of Istiwaa (Allah rising over His Throne) ... 6) Wahb bin Jareer said, ‘The Jahmiyyah are heretics, they think that He has not risen over His Throne.’ 13) Ibn al-Mubaarak said, ‘we do nat say as the Jahmiyyah say that Allah is on the earth, rather He has risen over His Throne.’ 14) And it was said to him, ‘how should we know our Lord?’ He said, ‘above the Heavens, over (’alaa) His Throne’ 29) Sufyaan ath-Thauri was asked about the verse, “and He is with you wheresoever you are”. He said, ‘His Knowledge.’ 64) Sadqa said, ‘I heard Sulaiman at-Taimi saying, ‘if I were asked, “where is Allah?” I would say, “Above (fee) the heaven”. And if it said, “where was the Throne before the Heaven?” I would say, “over the water.” And if it is said, “where w...

Concept of God in Islam

Bismillahi Rahman Roheem. Praise be to Allah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad(SAW)is His slave and Messenger. It is a known fact that every language has one or more terms that are used in reference to God and sometimes to lesser deities. This is not the case with Allah. Allah is the personal name of the one true God. Nothing else can be called Allah. The term has no plural or gender. This shows its uniqueness when compared with the word "god," which can be made plural, as in "gods," or made feminine, as in "goddess." It is interesting to notice that Allah is the personal name of God in Aramaic, the language of Jesus and a sister language of Arabic. The One true God is a reflecti...

Moral vaccination

Bismillahi Rahmani Roheem We praise Allah, and we bear witness that there is no God but Him, and we bear witness that Muhammad is His messenger and the Prophet. We ask Allah to shed His Peace and Blessings upon the Prophet, upon his family, his companions, and his followers to the Day of Judgment. My dear brothers and sisters in Allah’s Deen, when a family gets a new baby, almost immediately after the congratulations, they take the baby to the doctor to get the vaccine shots. There is a vaccine against measles, against diphtheria, polio and German measles …etc. Why do they do that? They do that because the vaccine will give the child immunity against those diseases. Someone might ask, since these babies are at home and are not exposed to the infections, why then do they need the vaccination so early. The answer is that it is important to give the immunity before exposure to infection, so that later on when they are exposed to the infection, they would have acquired the immunity and the...
