WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR IN THE NEXT ABODE…JANNAT OR JAHANAM? Part 2
The life in the Grave
Bismillahi Rahman Roheem.
All form of Praises is due for Allah. We adore Him and seek His help and forgiveness. We have Faith and Trust in Him. We seek Allah’s refuge against evil tendencies of our Soul and our bad deeds.
He whom Allah guides no one can lead him astray. And he whom Allah lets go astray there is none to guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, the One and without any Partner; and I also bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is His servant and Messenger. Allah had sent him with Truth, to give good tidings and to warn before the Doomsday. Whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be successful and well guided.
And whosoever disobeys either of them has gone astray. Such a person harms none save himself; he does no harm to Allah. The best Word is the Book of Allah. And the best Guidance is that given by Muhammad (SAW). Good things are the firm (original) ones, and Bad things are those introduced later on. And everything introduced later (in religion) is innovation. And every innovation is Hell fire.
Indeed there is life in the Grave before the Judgement Day and we should not be engrossed in things ephemeral and temporary, to the neglect of valuable and higher things in life.
Life is but short, and Death will soon claim you. Oh that man would only learn, before it is too late, the serious issues of the higher life! They must taste the consequences of their neglect, for every good enjoyed they must in the Hereafter give a strict account.
Allah Says: “The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) (from the more serious things), until ye visit the graves. But nay, ye soon shall know (the reality). Again, ye soon shall know! Nay, were ye to know with certainty of mind, (Ye would beware!) Ye shall certainly see Hellfire! Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight! Then, shall ye be Questioned that Day about the joy (ye indulged in)! Q102:1-8.
Acquisitiveness, that is, the passion for seeking an increase in wealth, position, the number of adherents or followers or supporters, mass production and mass organization, may affect an individual as such, or it may affect whole societies or nations. Other people's example or rivalry in such things may aggravate the situation. Up to a certain point it may be good and necessary. But when it becomes inordinate and monopolizes attention, it leaves no time for higher things in life, and a clear warning is here sounded from a moral point of view.
Man may be engrossed in these things till death approaches, and he looks back on a wasted life, as far as the higher things are concerned.
That is, until the time comes when you must lie down in the graves and leave and pomp and circumstance of an empty life. The true Reality will then appear before you. Why not try to strive for a little understanding of that Reality in this very life?
Three kinds of yaqin (certainty of knowledge) are: The first is certainty of mind or inference mentioned here: we hear from someone, or we infer from something we know: this refers to our own state of mind.
If we instruct our minds in this way, we should value the deeper things of life better, and not waste all our time in ephemeral things. But if we do not use our reasoning faculties now, we shall yet see with our own eyes, the Penalty for our sins. It will be certainty of sight.
We shall see Hell. That is not liable to any human error or psychological defects. We shall be questioned, i.e., we shall be held responsible for every kind of joy we indulge in whether it was false pride or delight in things of no value, or things evil, or the enjoyment of things legitimate, the last, to see whether we kept this within reasonable bounds.
Let us now take a brief look at the journey of the soul after death. This is truly an amazing story, all the more, so because it is true and one which we all must take. The sheer depth of knowledge we have concerning this journey, its precision and details, is a manifest sign that Muhammad (SAW) was truly Allah’s Last Messenger to humanity. The revelation he received and then communicated to us from His Lord is as unambiguous in its description of the afterlife as it is comprehensive. Our glimpse into this knowledge will begin with a brief exploration of the journey of the believing soul from the moment of death to its final resting place in Paradise.
May Allah blessed all our living and Dead teachers that have put us on the right path. Ameen
When a believer is about to depart this world, Angels with white faces come down from the heavens and say:
“O peaceful soul, come out to forgiveness from Allah and His pleasure.” (Hakim and others)”
The believer will look forward to meeting his Creator, as the Prophet (SAW) explained:
“When the time of the death of a believer approaches, he receives the good news of Allah’s pleasure with him and His blessings upon him, and so at that time nothing is dearer to him than what lies ahead of him. He therefore loves meeting Allah, and Allah loves meeting him.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)
The soul would then peacefully passes out of the body like a drop of water which emerges from a water-skin, and the Angels take hold of it:
The Angels gently extract it, saying:
“Do not fear and do not grieve, but receive good tidings of the Paradise which you were promised. We were your allies in this worldly life and [are so] in the Hereafter, and you will have therein whatever your souls desire, and you will have therein whatever you request [or wish], as a hospitality from the Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran 41:30-32).
Once extracted from the body, the Angels wrap the soul in a shroud smelling of musk and ascend up to the heavens. As the Gates of Heaven open for the soul, the Angels greet it:
“A good soul has come from the Earth, may Allah bless you and the body you used to dwell in.”
Introducing it with the best names it was called with in this life. Allah commands his “book” to be recorded, and the soul is returned back to Earth.
The soul then remains in a place of limbo in its grave, called the Barzakh, awaiting the Day of Judgment. Two fearsome, dread-inspiring Angels called Munkar and Nakeer visit the soul to ask it about its religion, God, and prophet. The believing soul sits upright in its grave as Allah Grants it the strength to answer the Angels with full faith and certainty.
Munkar and Nakeer: “What is your religion?”
Believing soul: “Islam”
Munkar and Nakeer: “Who is your Lord?”
Believing soul: “Allah”
Munkar and Nakeer: “Who is your Prophet?” (Or “What do you say about this man?”)
Believing soul: “Muhammad”
Munkar and Nakeer: “How did you come to know these things?”
Believing soul: “I read the Book of Allah (i.e. the Quran) and I believed.”
Then, when the soul passes the test, a voice from the heavens will call out:
“My slave has spoken the truth, supply him with furnishings from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open a gate for him to Paradise.”
The believer’s grave is made roomy and spacious and filled with light. He is shown what would have been his abode in Hell - had he been a wicked sinner - before a portal is opened for him every morning and evening showing him his actual home in Paradise. Excited and full of joyful anticipation, the believer will keep asking:
‘When will the Hour (of Resurrection) come?! When will the Hour come? Until he will be told to calm down.
The people who succeed in eternal Life are those who recognize and understand the one and only Eternal Reality, that is Allah, and further shape their probationary Life firmly and steadfastly on the principles of that Truth and Reality. They will have their friends and protectors in the good Angels, in contrast to the evil ones, who will have no friendship or protection, but only the reproaches of the Evil Ones.
The successful souls through Allah's infinite Mercy and Forgiveness, they will now be in the position of guests to Host, and will receive unnumbered gifts out of all proportion to their own merits.
Our Teacher, Shaikh Ibn Abayaomi(HT) used to tell us; “that the best of men is the man of Faith, Who calls all men to share his faith, whose life is pure, and whose law of life is the Will of Allah. Abstain from all evil, hidden and open, and adore Allah and Him alone”
His Signs are everywhere, and His Message is the same through all the ages, a guide and a healing to those who believe. Dispute not, but they live righteousness.
Knowledge belongs to Allah, but Falsehood Deprives man of hope, humility, and clear sight, and drives him into Hypocrisy. So turn to Truth, and live happily hereafter.
Alahumma infa`ni bima `allamtani wa `allamni ma yanfa`uni! (OH ALLAH! Make useful for me what You taught me and teach me knowledge that will be useful to me!
May Allah bless us to serve Him in all aspects of our lives.
